Investigators from the Scarsdale Police Department received a report on Thursday, Dec. 27 from employees at the CVS on Popham Road, where there was a reported larceny.
Police said that a manager at CVS stated that at approximately 6:30 p.m. that day, he walked past the Seasonal Products aisle in the store and found that five of the cosmetic displays had been emptied. Surveillance video found that a suspect entered the store, took the cosmetics off the shelf and put them in his coat an hour earlier. He then left without paying.
According to police, the suspect was described as a 6-foot tall African American or Hispanic man with a medium complexion and a shaved bald head. He was wearing a black coat, black pants, and black and white Nike sneakers at the time of the initial robbery. Officers canvassed the area following the robbery, but could not locate a suspect.
The following day, police said that they were again contacted by employees at CVS, for a report of a second larceny. An on-duty manager at the store told responding officers that he saw a suspect walk into the store and recognized him from the previous day’s larceny.
On the second day, the suspect - identified as Manhattan resident Jose Hernandez - concealed an estimated $180 worth of cosmetics on him, hiding it in his sweater. Police said that Hernandez “made no attempt to pay for the items and was captured on the CVS surveillance video taking the items.”
Police noted that Hernandez, 43, was identified as the same person who committed the larcenies the prior day to the tune of approximately $2,300 worth of merchandise.
Hernandez was arrested and charged with a felony count of grand larceny, as well as petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a controlled substance, all misdemeanors.
Following his arraignment, Hernandez was remanded to the Westchester County Jail without bail and is ordered to appear in Scarsdale Village Court at a later date.
